La obsolescencia prematura de los soportes cinematográficos, la fragilidad de los filmes frente a las manipulaciones y modificaciones ulteriores, la exigencia de originalidad y autenticidad propia de nuestro ámbito cultural, constituyen, para Rocco Mangieri, los problemas pragmáticos en torno a los cuales debe reflexionar una semiótica de la reproductividad. Si los mismos “monumentos patrimoniales”, los arquetipos de la cinematografía, son hoy en su mayoría, versiones de versiones ¿cómo postular responsablemente la búsqueda del original auténtico como único? Mangieri propone una fenomenología de los errores, una semiótica interpretativa y generativa de las manipulaciones fílmicas, en suma, una indagación mediante la cual el hacer del filólogo-filmólogo-restaurador pueda ser escudriñado desde todos los roles que ocupa: cognitivos, pragmáticos y pasionales.
