Starting from the fact that the cinema was never a silent art, but that from the beginning there was some form of sonorous emission accompanying projected images, this work seeks to rescue the vaguely understood process prior to the appearence of the first talking picture (The Jazz Singer, 1927). Contrary to what this overvalued milestone might lead one to think, the introduction of sound technology in world cinematography was a long, slow process marked by failure. Resorting to an exhaustive inquiry in newspapers and periodicals and with the support of existing studies, the author analyzes the modes of this process in Venezuela, describing the use of narrators and live sound effects, orchestras, mechanical additions incorporated in the projector, speaking devices and others, that marked the trajectory to the speaking movie. Not until the end of 1929 would sound cease to be an addition to become an integral part of the cinematographic spectacle in the country.
