The text is the first chapter of The film versions: discourses which see each other, a dissertation submited by its author as a requirement to obtain her degree from the School of Arts at the Universidad Central de Venezuela. “From the cinematografhic referent to the configuration of versions” explores the relationships between illusion and reality through the peculiar ways in which these relationships are reached in the case of the cinematographic representation, thanks to the analogy shown by the film images before a sensitive reality. By showing that it is pointless to use criteria such as thruthfulness and falsehood in order to explain the text of a film, the essay tries to demonstrate that filmmaking, as any other artistic expressions, works as a particular way of apprehending the reality in which a vision of the world is expressed, in fact constituting a version of our environment. This translated reality, the cinematographic work itself, overwhelmingly reveals its nature in the case of the filmic versions. A filmic version can appear as the perception of a film considered from another culture.
